Monitoring and maintenance

Print PDF

Natural Risk Sensing (NRS) is the wireless sensor network (WSN) platform project provided by Rockfall Defence for integrated monitoring of hydrogeological hazards (landslides, floods, coastal erosion, avalanches) and the corresponding mitigation infrastructures (rockfall barriers, netting, embankment for rock fall protection). The proposed technology is designed to be simple and easy to adopt: sensors measures are accessible via web, geo-referenced and integrated with external files and databases.

The approach followed the idea of developing multi-parameter wireless sensors borrowed from technologically advanced industries, capable of detecting various types of measurements (acceleration, position, temperature, etc.) useful to establish the actual conditions of rockfall protection barriers.

The goal is to provide an integrated and geo-referenced overview of all on-site measurements, thus supporting the preparation of "Structure Maintenance Plans" provided by the DM January 14, 2008 (new NTC, ch 10.1).

The system allows to validate design choices and check the operating conditions of the barriers through time (by summarizing or detailing data). The constant implementation of the system is ensured by the wireless technology that allows to deploy auto-configuring sensors with multi-parametric acquisition potential, which can be geo-referenced to work together with local resources more quickly. Such are the characteristics that guarantee speed and accuracy in the management of appropriate measures for the mitigation of hydrogeological hazards.
